JOCKEY QUOTES
KENT DESORMEAUX, SUSANS EXPRESS, WINNER: “It’s so great to be back in California, especially on Cal-Cup day. We picked this day to come back. The fans make it feel like Breeders’ Cup, I can’t believe the people here.
“Jorge (Periban) told me exactly how to ride this filly and obviously it worked out. She’s a very nice filly. I’m just glad to be back here and have to thank ‘Jorgie’ for putting me on.”
COREY NAKATANI, ANNIVERSARY KITTY, SECOND “She got a little sick on him (trainer Craig Dollase) and wasn’t going to rush her too much to make the race. But she was going so well after she got sick. He said she might be a work short, so I just tried to be patient with her and that’s what I did. He was spot-on and she ran a big race to get second and that’s a pretty nice feeling.”
VICTOR ESPINOZA, ROVENNA, THIRD: “I didn’t think I had it (the photo.) I had a nice trip sitting third behind horses and turning for home she was good but just not quick enough. She was running out of energy. She flattened out a bit but she ran great. It’s her first time on turf so it was a big effort for her and I only think she’s going to improve.”
TRAINER QUOTES
JORGE PERIBAN, SUSANS EXPRESS, WINNER: Asked about running her first time on turf: “Well, I had a lot of confidence in her because she’s a full sister to Oscillator . . . I knew this filly could run on the grass, and I made a little mistake last time when I took the blinkers off. I put them back, we did our best, and the jockey did a good job, too.
“I told Kent Desormeaux the filly had speed . . . If you put her in a good position, like second to fourth, you’ll be in good shape, because there’s a lot of traffic.”
Periban said this is his first stakes win in the United States. He is 54, from Mexico City, and has been training since 1983.
CRAIG DOLLASE, ANNIVERSARY KITTY, SECOND: “I thought it was a great effort. I missed a little time after her first race and I came into this race a work short, but I can’t complain. The post probably hurt us a little bit but Corey (Nakatani) said she came running and that this filly is all heart. I’m not sure what’s next but we’ll enjoy this and look for another spot here soon. We had to put up the money to supplement so it was nice it paid off for these owners”
NOTES: The winning owners are Elliston Black from Los Angeles; Saul Carrillo of Downey; Ed Delaney of Burbank; and Jorge Periban from Downey.
