EDA SOLID CHOICE FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT STAKES WIN

Eda, streaking winner of four straight stakes including the Grade I Starlet last Dec. 4 at Los Alamitos, steps down a notch in Sunday’s $75,000 Angel’s Flight for three-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, but that aligns with her program as trainer Sean McCarthy has bigger things in mind down the road.

“She’s doing fine and it’s a good starting spot to come back, so hopefully, all goes well,” said McCarthy of the Munnings filly previously trained by Bob Baffert.

Eda has not raced since winning Santa Anita’s Grade III Santa Ysabel Stakes March 6, but has been working forwardly.

“Everything’s been fine since I’ve had her, no hiccups, she’s been pretty straightforward, so we’re happy with where she’s at and how she’s doing,” McCarthy said.

Eda’s four stakes wins prior to joining McCarthy came in two restricted events, the Anoakia at Santa Anita last Oct. 24 and the Desi Arnaz at Del Mar last Nov. 13; and the aforementioned Starlet and Santa Ysabel.

The Angel’s Flight goes as race five of 10 on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first post time: Classical Romance, Ryan Curatolo, 20-1; Empire Gal, Victor Espinoza, 4-1; Elm Driver, Ricardo Gonzalez, 5-2; Eda, Juan Hernandez, 4-5; Unsolved Mystery, Mario Gutierrez, 12-1; and Kirstenbosch, Tyler Baze, 6-1.

BLACKER FILLY DOING WELL FOR SANTA BARBARA

Queen Ofthe Temple is scheduled to make her stakes debut next Saturday in the Grade III Santa Barbara Stakes for fillies and mares three and up at a mile and a half on the hillside turf course.

A four-year-old daughter of the Dynaformer stallion Temple City, the stretch-running bay broke her maiden on April 8, making a four-wide bid and drawing clear to capture the 1 1/8-mile race by 3 ¼ lengths under Drayden Van Dyke, who will be back aboard in the $125,000 Santa Barbara.

“She’s doing really well,” said Dan Blacker, who trains the Kentucky-bred for a partnership, and will breeze her tomorrow for the 72nd edition of the Santa Barbara first run in 1935.

“She worked super last weekend (four furlongs in 47:80, ninth-fastest of 74 drills at the distance), so we’ve got our fingers crossed,” Blacker added.

“The Santa Barbara is not going to be an easy spot but it’s probably going to be a short field (there were nine nominations to the race), so it’s a good opportunity to try that distance, although going a mile and a half, they either like it or they don’t.

“You don’t really know until they try, but she’s got the credentials to give it a shot, for sure.”

SANTA ANITA SIMO LINEUP ALTERED FOR DERBY WEEKEND

With Michelle Yu contributing to Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Day undercard show and Millie Ball on-site to accompany her husband, trainer Tim Yakteen with his one-two finishers in the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, Taiba and Messier, Santa Anita’s simulcast lineup has been juggled a bit locally this weekend.

Accordingly, former jockey Zoe Cadman and veteran handicapper/broadcaster Jeff Siegel will anchor Santa Anita’s simulcast desk and longtime Santa Anita simulcast talent Peter Lurie will handle pre-race interviews.

FINISH LINES: Congratulations to Red Baron’s Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC on winning races one, two and four yesterday along with owner Vaya Con Suerte LLC, two of the winners trained by Mark Glatt and one by trainer Michael McCarthy. The two wins by Red Baron’s and Rancho Temescal tied them for most wins by an owner this meet with Hronis Racing at 16 each . . . Jockeys Joe Bravo, Abel Cedillo and Ryan Curatolo each scored doubles Friday, while Juan Hernandez earned Jockey of the Week honors by a panel of racing experts for April 25 through May 1 by winning three of five graded races at Santa Anita. The award honors jockeys who are members of the Jockeys Guild, which represents more than 1,050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States . . . There were 113 recorded workouts Saturday, including a one-mile move by Twilight Derby winner Subconscious in 1:39 for Richard Mandella, and a five-furlong drill in a bullet 59 flat on the training track by Echo Eddie Stakes winner Smuggler’s Run for Richard Baltas.
