LONGSHOT SPEAKERS MAKES BIG RUN FROM OFF PACE TO TAKE $56,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY 1 ¾ LENGTHS UNDER VAN DYKE, TRAINED BY GALLAGHER, SHE GETS MILE ON TURF IN 1:35.39

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 5, 2018)–Next to last and about a dozen lengths off the lead with three furlongs to run, trainer Paddy Gallagher’s Speakers rallied eight-wide to win Thursday’s $56,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 1 ¾ lengths.  Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, the 4-year-old daughter of Unusual Heat got a mile on turf in 1:35.39.

Off at 7-1 in a field of 10 fillies and mares three and up, Speakers paid $17.60, $7.40 and $6.20.

“When she’s able to drop back like that, she relaxes and she runs so much better,” said Gallagher.  “If she’s in a pack of horses closer to the pace, she seems to fight the jock and it takes the run out of her.”

Owned by Aaron Wellman’s Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Speakers, who was beaten 15 ½ lengths under the same conditions on March 9, improved her overall mark to 10-2-3-0 and with the winner’s share of $33,600, she increased her earnings to $104,940.

Ridden by Corey Nakatani, My Aunt Tillie, who had a length on the winner turning for home, kept to her task in game fashion to prevail by a head over Almost Reality.  Off at 9-2, My Aunt Tillie paid $5.80 and $4.00.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Almost Reality sat mid-pack down the backside, wheeled five-wide turning for home, made the lead momentarily a furlong out and finished third, a head in front of Streak of Luck.

The longest shot in the field at 35-1, Almost Reality paid $16.40 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.98, 45.56, 1:10.09 and 1:22.95.

First post time for an eight-race card on Friday is at 12 noon, admission gates open at 10 a.m.  For additional information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.
