OPENING DAY PICK SIX CARRYOVER GENERATES TOTAL POOL OF $1,048,093; THERE WERE 143 WINNING TICKETS, EACH WORTH $4,306.60

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2013)–Heavily favored Kathleen Rose, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, tracked pacesetter Mangita until the top of the stretch and went on to a hard fought half length victory in Friday’s featured $58,000 Jupiter Purse, a first condition allowance event for California-bred fillies and mares at Santa Anita, getting one mile on turf in 1:34.69.

Ridden by Aaron Gryder, Mangita broke sharply and cleared off to lead Kathleen Rose by a length and a half as the field rounding the Club House turn en route to setting split times of 22.72, 46.61 and 1:10.75.

Trained by Mike Machowsky, Kathleen Rose, who broke her maiden on the front end going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course Nov. 3, bobbled a bit as the gates opened. She then settled into stride around the Club House turn, layed second outside Mangita down the backside, drew even leaving the quarter pole and the pair battled gamely to the wire.

“Going into the first turn a horse crossed in front of me and I almost clipped heels,” said Bejarano. “After the (Club House) turn, when I was finally clear, I stayed outside and just let her relax. At the top of the stretch, I let her kick, but it felt like she definitely was tired at the end.”

Off as the prohibitive 1-2 favorite in a field of seven, Kathleen Rose paid $3.00, $2.40 and $2.10. Owned by B & B Zietz Stables, Inc., she picked up $34,800 for the win, boosting her earnings to $88,550. She now has two wins, and a pair of seconds from five career tries.

“She got quite a bit of experience breaking slow and she tried to do everything wrong today,” said Machowsky. “I’m probably going to run her next in the ($125,000) Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint here on Jan. 25.”

The fourth choice at 9-1, Mangita paid $6.00 and $4.00.

It was another length and a quarter back to Warren’s Rosebud in third. Ridden by Joe Talamo, she was off at 7-1 and paid $2.80 to show.

There was a Pick Six carryover of $118,415 from opening day and $929,679 in “new money” was wagered on Friday for a total Pick Six pool of $1,048,093. Despite the fact there were three winning favorites, two of them odds-on, the Pick Six paid a healthy $4,306.60.

Racing resumes at Santa Anita on Saturday, with first post time at 12:30 p.m. The $75,000 Eddie Logan Stakes, for 2-year-olds at one mile on turf and the Grade III, $100,000 Daytona Stakes, for 3-year-olds and up at 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf, will serve as co-features on a nine-race program.
