TWO-DAY PICK SIX CARRYOVER OF $419,541 INTO THURSDAY, TOTAL POOL SHOULD APPROACH $2 MILLION

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2014)–Ridden by Martin Garcia, Indianapolis rocketed to an emphatic 4 ¼ length win in Monday’s $75,000 San Pedro Stakes, negotiating six furlongs in 1:08.80, which, according to Bob Baffert, will be his final start sprinting for the time being, as he’ll now be pointed down the Kentucky Derby Trail.

Breaking from post two, Indianapolis, who was an impressive first-out maiden winner on Nov. 24, was heavily favored at 3-5 and sat second early to longshot Rockin Home, who was ridden from the rail by Tyler Baze. Indianapolis took the lead at the quarter and dispatched a legitimate bid from 5-2 second choice Papa Turf, who ran second under Joe Talamo.

“We’ve always thought that he has that ‘super-star’ status and he showed it today,” said Baffert.

Unbeaten in two sprint starts, Baffert was asked when Indianapolis would stretch out to a route of ground.

“Now, he’ll run in stakes races…From here on out, hopefully up to the first Saturday in May, we’ll put him on a schedule that will stretch him out and hopefully we’ll win some big races. Keeping him healthy and happy, that’s all we can really do,” Baffert said.

With no show wagering, Indianapolis paid $3.20 and $2.10.

Owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, Indianapolis picked up $46,200 for the win.

Papa Turf, who loomed boldly while four-wide turning for home, was clearly second best and finished 2 ¾ lengths in front of Baffert’s other runner, Beach Hut, who was ridden by Mike Smith.

Papa Turf paid $2.80 to place.

Beach Hut, who was three wide off the turn, finished 8 ¾ lengths in front of Rockin Home, who was last in a field of four.

Fractions on the race were 21.80, 44.97 and 56.94.

There is a two-day Pick Six carryover of $419,541 into Thursday. It is expected Thursday’s total Pick Six pool should approach two million.

Live racing resumes at Santa Anita on Thursday, with first post time for an eight-race program at 1 p.m. Admission gates open at 11 a.m.
