ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2014)–An impressive gate to wire winner of the Grade II Bayakoa Stakes Dec. 7, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Broken Sword heads a field of seven 4-year-old fillies in Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 La Canada Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

In winning the mile and a sixteenth Bayakoa, the Broken Vow filly earned a career-best Beyer Speed figure of 103, winning by 4 ¼ lengths over Bob Baffert’s Fiftyshadesofhay, who she will have to contend with again on Sunday.

Ridden by eastern-based Joel Rosario in the Bayakoa, Broken Sword will be handled by Rafael Bejarano in the prestigious La Canada, Santa Anita’s final graded stakes offering for 4-year-old fillies.

Owned by Mark Dedomenico LLC, Hollendorfer and George Todaro, Broken Sword is based at Golden Gate Fields.

“She worked Tuesday at Golden Gate (five furlongs in 1:05.60), then shipped here, just like she did before she won the Bayakoa at Hollywood Park,” said Dan Ward, assistant to Hollendorfer, Thursday morning at Santa Anita. “She trains better up there.”

The La Canada will be Broken Sword’s first start at Santa Anita as she seeks career win number four in her ninth start. She has earnings of $156,660.

Hollendorfer will also be represented by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds’ homebred Let Faith Arise, who has been idle since running a close eighth, beaten 2 ¼ lengths, in the Grade III, 6 ½ furlong turf Senator Ken Maddy Stakes Nov. 2.

With four wins from seven starts sprinting, the La Canada will be her first try routing and her eighth career start.

Like Hollendorfer, Bob Baffert will also saddle a pair in the La Canada, Fiftyshadesofhay and Ondine.

The even money favorite in the nine-horse Bayakoa, Fiftyshadesofhay was a 5 ¾ length winner of the Grade III, mile and a sixteenth Santa Ysabel Stakes a year ago at Santa Anita and her biggest sophomore score came in the Grade II, mile and one eighth Black Eyed Susan on May 17 at Baltimore’s Pimlico Racecourse.

A Kentucky-bred filly by Pulpit, Fiftyshadesofhay had a sensational 2013, banking $738,057 while winning three races from nine starts. Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, she has four wins from 13 overall starts.

The “other Baffert” in Sunday’s La Canada is Peachtree Stable’s Ondine. A Florida-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, she’s been idle since taking the 6 ½ furlong Beverly J. Lewis Stakes at Fairplex Park Sept. 6. Her third place finish in the Grade II, 1 1/16 miles Hollywood Oaks on June 22 stamps her a legitimate contender in the La Canada.

With three wins, Ondine has never been off the board in eight starts and she has two wins from three starts at the La Canada distance.

Trainer Jim Cassidy will saddle the multiple graded stakes placed Oscar Party, who returns to Southern California following a third place finish in the 1 1/16 miles Zia Park Oaks Nov. 27. Owned by Deron Pearson, the Kentucky-bred filly by Dixie Union will be making her fourth start on natural dirt and her 12 overall in the La Canada. She has two wins, a second and three thirds.
