ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2022)–With all sights set on next Saturday, March 5, Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park will embark upon the inaugural 1/ST Saturday, an unrivaled day of bicoastal racing that will be highlighted by 15 stakes, with six of them run at Santa Anita and nine at Gulfstream.
Santa Anita’s racing will showcase three Grade I stakes, headed by the 85th running of the Grade I, $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino, as well as the Grade I, $500,000 Beholder Mile, the Grade I, $500,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, the Grade II, $400,000 San Felipe, the Grade II, $200,000 San Carlos presented by FanDuel and the Grade II, $200,000 Buena Vista.
While the San Felipe, a major prep for the Grade I Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 9 will showcase some of the west’s top 3-year-olds, the Grade II Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream will put Florida Derby (Grade I, April 2) hopefuls center stage, with both races to be contested at a mile and one sixteenth.
With early first post time locally set for 12 noon, fans will be treated to a fast-paced day of racing, as each track will be running a race approximately every 30 minutes. Fifteen stakes are scheduled to be run from 12 noon PT to 3:30 PT.
