JOCKEY QUOTES
JOE BRAVO, LUCKY GIRL, WINNER: “I’d say this filly had a little trouble (last time). She’s a really strong horse, strong headed and I guess it’s about maturity. She’s learning how to run and she’s doing really nice. I was really happy that she was able to relax. You never know with races like this. There was one speed horse on paper, but it seemed like everybody went. She was able to relax, take a breath. I kind of took advantage of that slow pace and took it to them pretty early in the race. It’s nice when they outrun everybody, right?”
TRAINER QUOTES
RICHARD BALTAS, LUCKY GIRL, WINNER: “We’ve thought a lot of her, but she wouldn’t settle. She was a bit rank in her first two races. We paid decent money for her and she was highly regarded, so I just said ‘You know what, I think she needs to go to San Luis Rey and take a deep breath…We were in a maiden race yesterday going a mile on turf and we drew the 10 hole. So this race came up and it looked like a better spot because we had drawn so far outside in the maiden race.
“It was all about her switching off. She switched off (relaxed) in the beginning of the race and Joe knew he had a lot of horse and he made that early move, which was the right thing to do. Joe got her behind horses the last time (when fifth in one mile turf maiden special weight on Dec. 27). She was a touch rank, but she did settle and she did make a nice little run at the end. Joe really put it together today with the filly.”
